I figure this is a topic ZC can probably sink his teeth into, plus it's my Obsession of the Month , so, here we are with a topic.
My beloved girl has just got me into watching the anime... and by all that is good and wholesome in the world (which, admittedly isn't much), the anime is simply awesome. I remember ZC giving me a copy of the manga many moons before it became trendy in the Western world, and I was impressed with it muchly, but never got much further into it than that. The anime, however, has me completely hooked on the series now.
I'm up to about the 7th episode, so not too far into the series, but I love how cerebral it is, how every episode plays out like a game of chess between Light and L. It's a really nice change of pace for a show to be so grounded in a cat and mouse battle of wills, and DN takes the concept and really runs with it perfectly.
L and Light are both extremely awesome, too... and I can't help but side with Light in the whole damn thing XD. Ryuk is a great character too and adds quite nicely to the whole affair. The aesthetics of the character design for Ryuk are fantastic, too, which really helps.
